How collaboration, authenticity, and experience continue to shape APD under Dan Sargent’s leadership.
Dan Sargent has spent the past 21 years helping shape APD Engineering and Architecture through a leadership style grounded in collaboration, authenticity, and a genuine passion for design. Since becoming President in 2022, he has continued to guide the firm with a clear vision and a steady, confident approach that reflects both his experience and his commitment to APD’s future.
Long before architecture became his profession, it started as a personal interest rooted in drawing, building, and creating. What began with Legos and sandcastles eventually evolved into a career focused on designing spaces that people not only use, but truly value in their everyday lives. That same curiosity and creativity continue to influence how he leads today.
Throughout his career, Dan has approached architecture as more than just the creation of buildings. For him, the process starts with understanding people and the challenges they are trying to solve. While clients may arrive with a clear idea of what they want, he believes the best outcomes come from digging deeper into the “why” behind the project. That mindset allows him to collaborate more effectively and guide projects toward solutions that are thoughtful, practical, and aligned with long term goals.
One of the most influential experiences in Dan’s career has been his work with the ALDI National Real Estate office and the development of the ALDI Prototype program. Working alongside a fast paced, highly strategic organization gave him valuable insight into how thoughtful design decisions can improve efficiency, operations, and customer experience at scale. Through research, planning, and collaboration, he helped support studies that informed key decisions while strengthening the analytical and leadership skills that continue to shape his work today.
Dan is also passionate about helping others better understand the role architects play throughout a project. While architecture is often associated with drawings and design concepts, he sees the architect as the central point of coordination across the entire process. From engineers and contractors to vendors and ownership teams, much of the role involves bringing people together, maintaining alignment, and keeping projects moving forward successfully.
His leadership philosophy is rooted in authenticity, shaped by one piece of advice that has stayed with him throughout his career: be yourself. “Once I stopped feeling like I had to act or lead like someone else, I became more confident in my day to day work,” Dan says. That perspective carries into how he leads today, giving him the confidence to make thoughtful decisions, navigate challenges directly, and lead with clarity.
As APD enters a new chapter, including the recent move into its new office space, Dan’s leadership continues to reflect a strong sense of direction and dedication to the firm’s long-term success. His ability to balance strategic thinking with a people-first mindset has helped build lasting relationships across clients, partners, and internal teams.
Outside the office, Dan enjoys travel and often reflects on family trips to Great Abaco Island in the Bahamas and John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in the Florida Keys, destinations he hopes to revisit someday. He also appreciates the humor found in classic comedy films, especially the unforgettable lines from Airplane! that still make him laugh years later.
Through his leadership, experience, and long-standing commitment to APD, Dan continues to guide both projects and people with a focus on collaboration, problem-solving, and creating meaningful spaces that leave a lasting impact.
