Some careers are built through experience, adaptability, and a commitment to continuous growth.
For Bob McCormick, architecture has always been rooted in problem-solving, collaboration, and delivering quality work that stands the test of time. His promotion to Senior Technical Advisor reflects decades of technical expertise, collaborative leadership, and the trusted guidance he has consistently provided across APD teams and projects.
Where It All Began
Bob began his career in the mid-1980s in Austin, Texas, working in residential drafting, where he developed a strong foundation in efficiency, coordination, and precision. That early experience shaped his ability to balance speed with quality, a skill that continued throughout his career as he moved into increasingly complex commercial architecture projects.
Over time, Bob built extensive experience across commercial architecture, developing a reputation for technical problem-solving and helping guide projects toward successful outcomes.
Finding the Right Fit at APD
When Bob joined APD in 2016, the company’s fast-paced retail environment immediately felt familiar, and he felt comfortable stepping into the role of Project Architect.
“It reminded me of my early days,” he shared.
APD’s project pace and collaborative approach aligned naturally with his technical background and problem-solving mindset. From the beginning, he brought a hands-on approach to project leadership, supporting drawing coordination, technical execution, and team collaboration across a wide range of projects.
Throughout his time at APD, Bob has remained deeply involved in the technical side of project delivery while helping strengthen coordination and communication across teams.
A Career Defined by Problem-Solving
Over the past ten years, Bob has become known for his ability to navigate technically complex projects and support teams through challenging project conditions. Bob’s experience includes a diverse range of architectural projects, supporting APD’s work in prototype development, ground-up commercial projects, specification writing, and technical coordination through complex jurisdictional approval processes.
One notable example was the ALDI project in Westfield, Massachusetts, which required extensive coordination due to floodplain requirements, limited site conditions, and environmental challenges. The project highlighted APD’s collaborative approach and Bob’s ability to guide technical problem-solving through complex project demands.
That same mindset has also shaped his work on APD’s retail prototype teams, including collaborative efforts on projects such as the ALDI V9.0 prototype.
For Bob, successful projects are built through collaboration, communication, and a shared commitment to delivering strong results for clients.
A Natural Mentor
Throughout his career, Bob has remained committed to professional growth and mentorship. His involvement with organizations such as the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) helped strengthen both his leadership and technical expertise.
Through AIA, he served in several leadership roles, including chapter president and representation on the New York State AIA board. He also completed the Construction Documents Technologist (CDT) certification through CSI, further strengthening his expertise in specifications, documentation, and project coordination.
Today, Bob encourages younger professionals to get involved early in organizations like AIA and CSI, emphasizing the value of continuous learning, relationship-building, and collaboration throughout the industry.
That same philosophy carries into his role at APD.
“I believe everyone at the office has something to teach,” he shared.
Colleagues across the organization rely on Bob not only for technical guidance, but also for mentorship, collaboration, and support. His promotion to Senior Technical Advisor formalizes a role he has already been serving for years.
Looking Ahead
In his new position, Bob will continue supporting technical collaboration across teams while helping strengthen project consistency, efficiency, and staff development. He will also continue helping refine processes and technical standards that support efficient project delivery and strong client outcomes.
As APD continues to grow, strong technical leadership remains critical to delivering consistent quality, supporting client trust, and helping projects move forward smoothly from design through construction.
Celebrating the Next Chapter
Bob’s promotion recognizes years of technical leadership, collaboration, and commitment to supporting both clients and colleagues.
Congratulations to Bob on this well-earned promotion and his continued impact at APD.
