Brian Grinnell believes great projects begin with shared understanding. By bringing people together, creating clarity, and aligning disciplines around a common goal, he helps teams turn complex challenges into practical solutions. His approach is grounded in open communication, collaboration, and the conviction that no problem is too big when the right people work together.
Growing up around design and construction inspired Brian to pursue architecture from an early age. Since joining APD in 2007, he has advanced from Designer to Principal and contributed to more than 250 projects across 24 states. His experience spans commercial and residential design, new urbanism, mixed-use development, and warehouse and distribution facilities. Brian also founded an architecture firm specializing in commercial design and building inspections. Drawing on more than two decades of experience, he guides projects from concept through construction and helps clients bring their visions to life through thoughtful, practical design.
Brian’s leadership philosophy centers on supporting his team, leading by example, and creating an environment where challenges can be discussed openly and solved collaboratively. Just as his mentors invested in him, he is committed to helping others grow and succeed.
Outside of work, Brian enjoys hiking, camping, snowshoeing, and spending time with his family.

Brian’s favorite project is ALDI Six Corners in Downtown Chicago. The project was set on a unique triangular-shaped site, and due to its distinctive shape, it resulted in aesthetically pleasing facades. Besides the design aspect, this project had many challenges that led to some very strategic layout planning. It was truly a one-of-a-kind project.
